Can you please give me a brief explanation of the University system in America?

  1. After finishing the secondary education, the university system follows as such (generally):

4 years as an undergrad to earn a bachelors’ degree
There are three broad kinds of bachelors’ degrees: Bachelor of Arts, of Science, and of Music. Under these categories there are many, many specific kinds (i.e. History (under Bachelor of Arts), Chemistry (under Bachelor of Science), Performance (under Bachelor of Music))

If the individual wants to continue their education at yet another higher level there are:
2-3 years as a graduate student to earn a masters’ degree. The categories are the same (Arts, &tc.) but the student is not required to earn the same degree as their bachelors’. For example, a student can earn a bachelors’ degree in History, but get a masters’ in Education.

Should the individual then want to further their education, they can earn a doctoral degree. This is either in the form of a Ph.D. for the Arts or an M.D. for the Sciences. This process can take anywhere from 2 to 4 years to complete.

This is the general scheme of university education in America.

However, there is another degree on can earn: an associates’ degree. This degree is below a bachelors’, so many people do not spend time on this degree. As a part of the undergrad period, a student may take on what is called a minor. This will result in an associates’ degree in that subject. This degree is open to those students who may not want to complete 4 years of higher education, since this degree takes about 2 years to complete. As with the graduate degree, the associates’ does not have to be in the same subject as the bachelors’. Also, this would make no sense, because the work for both is being done at the same time and thus would be redundant.

All of this is open to anyone willing to learn. Yet, it is highly expensive and it is up to the school to decide how much financial aid it wants to give to deserving students. Much of the time students apply for academic scholarships and finance based loans and grants.
